Liquid propylene glycol is a glucogenic feed component and a source of glucose precursors for dairy cows. It is intended for additional support of energy and carbohydrate metabolism in the transition period and in early lactation. Propylene glycol serves as a source of substrates for glucose formation and helps reduce the concentration of ketone bodies in hyperketonemia. Part of the substance undergoes microbial conversion in the rumen, including the formation of propionate and other metabolites; the other part is absorbed unchanged. Propylene glycol and its metabolites take part in glucose formation. Efficacy depends on the dose, route of administration, feed intake, the animal's condition and the presence of concurrent diseases. Higher milk yield, milk fat and protein content and improved reproduction are not guaranteed results of use.
